Horse brass (post Roman times) originated in England during the 19th century and became particularly popular in the Victorian era. It was created for horses to wear as protective amulets to ward off evil spirits and the “evil eye”—both for the horses and their riders (by extension). It is believed that horse brass safeguarded against sickness and accidents, and that the reflective metal could distract or blind the sinister spirits encountered.

It was used in traditional folk magick and is still used in current day witchcraft for luck and spells for protection, as well as pagan altar additions.

For the less superstitious, these storied charms have become collectable pieces due to their associations with status and/or their unique designs.
